The Club’s Squash Championship for both Ladies and Men this year has now been completed. In the Men’s final we saw the same two finalists as last year, Grant Miller and Matt Wagg. Over the last year Grant has played much more squash, whilst Matt has been finishing university.
Grant was determined to reverse last year’s score, and set out at a blistering pace. Matt seemed a little below his best trying to reply to his opponent’s race to the title. The crowd were treated to some wonderful rallies with a number of stunning winning shots by both players.
It become clear as the game progressed that Grant was in no mood to allow Matt back into the match, by playing it very tight with good line & length keeping Matt at full stretch. Perhaps Matt felt he had to take chances by playing winning shots, in an effort to dislodge his opponent’s grip on the game. Grant ran out as a well deserved winner by playing a very solid & skilful game.
Both Grant and Matt have performed very well so far for the Club in the Sussex Squash matches.
Our lady finalists knew each other’s game well! Nicola Cowdell was aware of Jacquie Evans’ high difficult to return serves and Jacquie in full knowledge of Nicola’s ability to rally well and chase down balls. Jacquie started well with her accurate serves, however Nicola soon got to grips with returning well and developing the rally. In the second game some lovely shot making from both players, saw the serve pass backwards and forwards a number of times without the score moving on.
Nicola’s advantage of speed around the court gave Jacquie a few problems to solve. Jacquie tried some even higher serves to Nicola’s backhand, but Nicola seemed to have the answer. Nicola continued with steady racquet skills and kept the pressure on Jacquie. Nicola lifted the trophy again this year with another solid performance.

This year's Handicap Final was a great game of squash between Grant Miller and Ian Creelman. The spectators were treated to some truly great rallies and shot making. Both Ian and Grant are very experienced players and know the game well, this boded well in providing a game fit for the Final.
After 45 minutes of both players having to cover all sectors of the court, the sheer pace was having an effect on the pair. Grant produced a number of telling deft shots to the front corner and Ian showed some super court awareness.
Grant drew on his experience to achieve victory in 4 games, Ian felt perhaps he had to force the game by having to play winners, as the handicap adjustment was 5 points in Grant's favour.
